The Transition to Continuous Lighting for Sound Sensitive Pets

Over the past year, we’ve learned a lot about what makes our sessions not just successful, but truly enjoyable for every pet who steps in front of our camera. One of the biggest shifts we’ve made is transitioning from a traditional three-light strobe setup to incorporating a continuous key light for pets who are sensitive to flashes.

Out of the 100+ pets who have visited our studio, we’ve found that roughly one in five show mild to severe discomfort when the strobe light “pops” and flashes. To give some context, every pet that visits our studio is counter-conditioned to the camera and strobe lights. In simpler terms, that means we pair the sound and light of the camera and strobe with something positive, like treats or praise, to help the pet form a calm and happy association.

For most pets, the initial reaction is minimal… perhaps an ear flick or a curious glance. They quickly move past it with some encouragement and continue on the backdrop without issue. But for a small percentage of pets, the reaction is much stronger. These pets will immediately move away from the set, seeking comfort near their parents or the door. It’s a clear and distinct difference, and in our experience, we’ve yet to see a complete turnaround once a pet reaches that level of discomfort.

At that point, the session becomes a delicate balance of rebuilding trust, only to lose it again each time the flash goes off. This process can unintentionally “poison” the reward, meaning that the treats and praise we’re using to reassure the pet start to lose their positive effect because they’ve become associated with the scary light. It’s not a pleasant experience for anyone.. the pet, the parents, or our team. We’ve even noticed that the other confident pet may also then second guess the process after seeing their sibling, and start becoming unsure and worried about the light.

As a dog trainer with over ten years of experience, I built Click! Pet Photography with one core value: your pets always come first. Their comfort and confidence show through every image. While we always aim for the cutest, silliest, and most heartwarming photos possible, we never want to achieve that at the expense of a pet’s emotional well-being.

To better support those pets, we’ve invested in a powerful continuous light with a built-in fan that provides strong, consistent illumination without the sudden “pop” of a strobe. We’re still fine-tuning this setup, but even after our first few sessions, the results have been very promising. (See photos above).

For example, in multi-dog sessions, we’ve learned that one dog’s comfort level can influence another’s. If one dog is confident with the strobe but their sibling finds it stressful, we now begin with the continuous light to help the sensitive dog feel more relaxed and build trust first. The more confident dog can hang back with a wrangler or parent, enjoying treats and attention, while we work gently and patiently with the more cautious pup.

Once the more sensitive dog’s session is complete, parents can choose to let them relax in the car or give them a break outside while the other dog gets their photos with the strobe lights.. This approach often helps us get the best results for everyone involved. However, we understand that some families prefer to keep all their dogs together from start to finish, and we completely respect that. In those cases, we’ll continue the session with both dogs in the room while making sure the experience stays as positive and low-stress as possible. Before we start, we’ll create a game plan based on what works best for you and your dogs, then adjust our approach to meet their needs in real time. That might include gentle reassurance from a parent or my wrangler, extra praise and treats, or simply reminding your sound-sensitive pup that they’re safe and won’t be asked to return to the backdrop area.

At the end of the day, every session teaches us something new. We’re constantly learning, evolving, and improving.. not just for the pets who trust us, but for the pet parents who invest their time and heart into these sessions. We’re deeply grateful for that trust and excited to continue refining what we do to make each experience even better.
